Pick 4 Lottery: How to Play, Names by State and Results

Pick 4 is a lottery game where four digits, each from 0 to 9, are drawn at a time. That makes 10,000 possible results, from 0000 to 9999, so the chance of matching all four in the exact order drawn is 1 in 10,000. Dozens of lotteries in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada run it, often under another name, like Win 4 in New York or Cash 4 in Georgia.

How Pick 4 works

Each drawing picks four digits one at a time, and each can be any digit from 0 to 9. Digits can repeat, so 0000, 1123 and 9070 are all possible results. Every one of the 10,000 results has the same chance in every drawing.

Each lottery runs its own game on its own schedule, and a few share one drawing: New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine draw Tri-State Pick 3 and Pick 4 together. Some draw once a day, others more often, and each drawing has its own name, like Midday or Evening.

Ways to play Pick 4

Options vary by lottery. Of the 31 lotteries in the table below that list their ways to play, most offer each of these.

Straight (exact order)
Your four digits have to match the drawn digits in the exact order. You may also see it as Exact or Exact Order, and Puerto Rico's version is Exacta.
Box (any order)
Your digits can match in any order. The box is 4-way, 6-way, 12-way or 24-way, depending on how many of your digits repeat. Other names include Any Order and, in Puerto Rico, Combinada.
Straight/Box
One play that covers both at once. Look for it under names like 50/50 or Exact/Any Order.
Combo
One ticket that covers every exact-order arrangement of your digits, so it costs more than a single play. It's sometimes called Combination or Wheel.

Pick 4 add-ons

Some lotteries sell optional add-ons for an extra cost. These are the ones named in the rules we read, and other lotteries may offer add-ons too.

Wild Ball
One extra digit from 0 to 9 is drawn after each drawing and can replace one of the drawn digits, which opens up more matching combinations. Adding it doubles the cost of the play. Offered in Connecticut and Puerto Rico.
Fireball
An extra digit from 0 to 9 is drawn after the regular drawing and can stand in for one of the drawn digits, so more of your combinations can match. It doubles the price of the play. Offered in Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
Sum it up!
For an extra $1 per dollar wagered, your play also matches when the sum of your four digits equals the sum of the four drawn, whether or not the digits themselves match. It can't be used with Front, Mid or Back Pair. Offered in Idaho.
Superball
An extra digit that can replace any one of the drawn digits. It costs the same as your base wager, so it doubles the price, and it can't be added to a 1-Off play. Offered in Indiana.
Instant Win
A side game for an extra $1 per play. Each of your numbers is compared with an Instant Win number printed on your ticket, apart from the regular drawing. Offered in New York.
Instant Match
A separate game with its own rules. The lottery's official rules give its cost. Offered in Rhode Island.
TAG
An optional add-on for an extra $1 that you can add up to 10 times per ticket. Its rules are on the lottery's site. Offered in Atlantic Canada.
Encore
For an extra $1 you get a second game, with its own rules and separate from the regular drawing. Offered in Ontario.
Extra
A side game sold with your play for an extra $1, with rules of its own. The lottery's official rules explain how it works. Offered in Quebec and Western Canada.

What Pick 4 is called in each lottery

It's Win 4 in New York, Cash 4 in Georgia, Daily 4 in Texas, Play 4 in Connecticut and Pega 4 in Puerto Rico. Massachusetts calls its version The Numbers Game. What is Pick 4?

Pick 4 draws four digits from 0 to 9, and you choose your own digits to compare with the result. The version you see depends on your lottery, which sets its own name, drawing times and rules.

What are the Pick 4 odds?

There are 10,000 possible results, so the chance of matching every digit in the exact order drawn is 1 in 10,000. Other ways to play have different odds, which each lottery lists in its official rules.

What's the difference between Straight and Box?

A straight play needs your digits to match in the exact order drawn. A box play accepts any order. Because more results count, a box has better odds than a straight, and its odds depend on how many of your digits repeat. Some lotteries call them Exact and Any Order.

Why is it called something else where I live?

The name is up to each lottery. It's Win 4 in New York, Cash 4 in Georgia and Daily 4 in Texas, but all of them draw four digits from 0 to 9.

How often is Pick 4 drawn?

It depends on the lottery. Some draw once a day and others more than once. The table on this page lists each lottery's drawings.

Can past results help me choose numbers?

No. Every drawing is independent, and each result has the same chance each time. A number that came up yesterday is no more or less likely today.
